Cooking With Kids
July 2004 (Newstream) --
ANCHOR LEAD: If your kids can't stand the summer heat - get them into the kitchen! Matt Kelly explains why summer is a good time to teach your kids to cook. (:53)
SCRIPT: Lifestlyes, I'm Matt Kelly. Running out of activities for the kids this summer? How about teaching them some easy cooking skills? Kids love to help out in the kitchen, and, says Maggie Gilbert from Betty Crocker Kitchens, it teaches them some essential life skills.
CUT: (Gilbert) Cooking is a great way for kids to learn some skills and develop self-esteem. And in fact, a recent survey by the Betty Crocker Kitchens shows that 89 percent of kids surveyed felt proud when they have cooked something themselves.
SCRIPT: Gilbert says even the youngest child can crack eggs and measure liquids. Older kids can stir a sauce, cut up veggies, or help add ingredients.
CUT: (Gilbert) Our study showed that 64 percent of kids surveyed would like to help more with cooking in their home, but it is important to remember that if a hot stove, or an oven or sharp knives are involved, you do need adult supervision.
SCRIPT: Gilbert says you can find many fun and child-friendly recipes on BettyCrocker.com. I'm Matt Kelly.
